 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND |
 |
Cihhu was formerly named Piwei and the village used
to call it “the entrance to a cave”
as it is situated at the northern exit of the Baiji
Tunnel. Previously named Nioujiaonanpo the lake
was renamed Cihhu by the late President Jiang, Jieshih
when he came here to carry out an inspection of
the mountain area. The scenery reminded him of his
homeland – Sikou, Fenghua, Jhejiang and therefore
he renamed the lake Cihhu in memory of his mother?s
kindness and love. In 1955, Lin, Benyuan family
provided the land around the lake of 19 hectare
for the purpose of constructing the late President
Jiang?s residence.
The late President Jiang himself conceived the idea
of the building, Retired Servicemen Engineering
Agency carried out the construction work, and Cihhu
Guesthouse was completed on June 13, 1959. The late
President Jiang passed away on April 5, 1975, his
coffin was temporarily placed here on the 16th of
the same month and thereafter the guesthouse was
renamed Cihhu Presidential Burial Place. Mr. Jiang,
Jingguo wrote Sad Memories of the Late President
Jiang when he kept a vigil beside the coffin.
The Ministry of Defense set up an administration
office here to undertake the responsibility for
receiving visitors, management and maintenance.
In 1988, Mr. Jiang, Jingguo passed away and his
coffin was temporarily laid in Dasi Presidential
Burial Place, Touliao and therefore the administration
office was transformed into Cihhu-Dasi Presidential
Burial Place Administration Office. An average of
approximately 1 million visitors comes here to pay
his respects to the late president every year.
